Our table of four
feels especially lonely tonight
as we all sneak a glance at the empty chair
that has not been used in two years.

Dust has gathered upon the chair
and books have been piled on top of it.
No one sits in the chair.
It just does not feel right.

I try very hard not to cry.
My mother has already sobbed during dinner
and my sister and I looked at the ground with a pained look
at hearing our mother's cries.

After dinner I walk out into the dark night.
The air is cold, but I don't mind.
My hands are in my pockets
and my hood covers my saddened face.

I walk to my old elementary school park
and sit on the old creaky swing.
Tears fill my eyes and I try to hold them back.
My hands begin to turn red from my tight grip on the chains.

The tears finally spill out of my eyes
and I look up to the clear black sky.
The stars are shining brightly
and I almost feel a bit of relief looking up at the sky.

I smile slightly and begin to sing
the "Happy Birthday" song to my dad.
The stars of the sky looked like they were almost watching over me,
just like my dad had watched over my family when he was alive.

"Dad, I miss you.
Thank you for everything.
I love you so much.
Happy birthday."

I slowly rise from the swing
and begin the chilly walk home.
I again look up to the stars
and smile to the clear night sky.

"Thank you Dad, for everything
and happy birthday."
Today is my dad's birthday. He would have been 53. This is a poem in his memory, hope you enjoy.

My Father is gone.
He died drinking and driving.
It was new years eve.
it was a head on collision.
